WESLEYAN CHURCH IN JAMAICA
The Wesleyan Methodist Church and the pilgrim holiness church merged in the USA in June 1968. In January of 1969, visiting North American leaders and our Caribbean leaders effected a local merger in Jamaica. The single Jamaica district began at that 1969 merging conference. The later Rev. Amos King was the single superintendent of 1969-1972.
Dr. A.W. Taylor became field Superintendent in 1970 when the Caribbean Committed itself to concentrated indigenous development. From 1970 to 1974 we were a field Conference. It was at the 1974 Caribbean Conference that we became a Provisional General Conference and then the title became General Superintendent.
The Wesleyan Holiness Church in Jamaica began as three separate entities from as early as the 1930’s. The Missionary Bands of the world, which started the Bible School, no CWC-Jamaica, was the first organized Holiness Movement in Jamaica.
The Pilgrim Holiness Church, which soon started field work in the Caribbean, began its work in Jamaica among the Eastern parishes. The Wesleyan Methodist church of America was then merged with the Missionary Bands of the World. The Pilgrim Holiness Church concentrated its evangelistic efforts in the parishes of Portland, St. Mary, Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine and St. Thomas- Eastern Jamaica while the Wesleyan Methodist Church established congregations in the parishes of Hanover, Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Manchester and Clarendon- Western Jamaica.
The Northern Jamaica District, which covers St. James, Trelawny and St. Ann began in 11946 as a field work of the eastern Jamaica District. The GBA’s 126/2 and 127/2 resolutions of 1980/81 created the three Jamaican Districts.
There are fifty-seven Wesleyan Churches in Jamaica; 12 on the Northern District, 15 in east and 30 on the Western District.
